A Warm Welcome to the Land of Fortresses and Castles! The region around Merano (Meran) particularly lives up to its name. Surprisingly, there are a total of 400 fortresses and castles throughout South Tyrol, making it Europe’s richest region for notable castles and chateaus. A large proportion of these are located in different towns in the holiday area of Merano and Environs. The oldest local aristocratic houses date back to the early Middle Ages. After a series of historical events, many of these original fortresses and castles are back in business and are now home to museums, wineries, restaurants and many other tourist attractions. Here, visitors can go on an exciting journey back in time to the Middle Ages.
